[San Francisco Earthquake Aftermath, Part 3

by Unknown

Published 1906

Chilling post-earthquake footage, shot in the Western Addition and on Market Street in San Francisco. The first sequence (Western Addition) shows a great deal of evocative neighborhood detail from one hundred years ago.

Subject: How It Was
See what it was like for people to handle an unimaginable catastrophe with the primitive technology of 1906. From the historical viewpoint, one of the most important early silent films ever taken.

Amazing and Sad . Unbelievable we have any footage at all .
Spuzz , that is a week argument . They just had a natural catastrophe happen . I don't believe camera angles were paramount . When I see the date of your post that hopefully explains its oddness .

Subject: Fascinating historic film of 100 years ago.
Watching this 100 year old film brings to view the terrible devastation of the Earthquake. It is like traveling back in time. Seeing the moving people and horse drawn carriages almost made they seem alive to me. The simplicity of the camera work added to the realism.

Another one of those ¡®strap the camera on to the trolley and let¡¯s go take a ride¡¯ films that was taken in 1906. At least this time it¡¯s not all in a straighr line, as, yes, we take some turns as well. The problem with this, and all of the trolley-cam footage, is we just see straight ahead. We don¡¯t see anything on the sides. As we¡¯re rolling past, we can see the devastation on the sides, but we don¡¯t like, turn the camera to get a better look. This hampers this I feel.

Subject: Before and after
This is what you might call the "after" film corresponding to the incredible "Trip Down Market Street" (file TripDown1905) shot few years earlier. Obviously made by the same person, this film retains its predecessor's great power through the simplicity and effectiveness of its design.

To make things even more interesting and confusing, another film is available at the archive on the same subject: SanFranc1906_2. It could also be a work of the same person although its style is a bit different and less disciplined.

Plus, to make things even more confusing, the animated GIF you see on this page mistakenly shows frames from that *other* film I mentioned above. Get this one, you won't regret it.
